h'ART for Cô Vietnam
An Afternoon of Performance Arts & Art Exhibition to Benefit Women in Vietnam
August 7th, 2004
2-5 PM

Tressider Oak Lounge, Stanford University

Mountain View, CA (June 24, 2004) -- Cô VN (Creating Opportunities in Vietnam), launches its microfinance program to assist disadvantaged women in Vietnam with a benefit performance and art auction on Saturday, August 7, at the Stanford University campus. All proceeds will benefit Cô VN's programs that provide funding, business training and mentoring to the women of Vietnam.

"Our research and many visits to Vietnam in the past year indicate that there is a lack of programs that encourage women entrepreneurship in Vietnam. Cô VN is our small contribution to help the poor of Vietnam to achieve economic sufficiency and a better livelihood," said Hanna Bui-Eve, Cô VN's Chair and President.

The event will be hosted by Thuy Vu, award-winning co-anchor for ABC7 News, and opened by Nguyen Qui Duc of national public radio's Pacific Time. Event highlights include an interview with revolutionary Vietnamese writer Le Hang, as well as appearances by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Unity Nguyen and Performing Artist Lan Tran. The event will feature original artwork from women of Vietnamese descent and those with an interest in Vietnam. The artwork will be available for purchase through silent auction. Tickets are $35 each.

The group was formed with a mission to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged women in Vietnam. The organization chose Cô VN, which means "Miss Vietnam" in Vietnamese to signify the people benefiting from the organization. Hanna Bui-Eve, chair and president of Cô VN, comments on the symbolic duality of an event focused on Vietnamese women: "We think that promoting women both here and in Vietnam is important. There's gender inequality everywhere and we would like to be a part of closing that gap for our own community and homeland."
